Two secrets in one series: what are your real odds?

When a series hides two secrets, your chance of pulling one goes up, but your chance of a particular one doesn't. A Sonny Angel series with secrets at 2 in 144 and 1 in 144 works like odds of 1 in 48 for either one.

2 in 144 is the same as 1 in 72.
A 12-box assortment is 12.

In 12 boxes, your chance of at least one secret is 22%. Together, the two secrets work like odds of 1 in 48.

An even chance at the rarer secret takes 100 boxes ($1,225.00), and an even chance at both takes 131 boxes ($1,604.75).

Why two secrets feel easier than they are

Two secrets double the ways to win, so "any secret" comes faster. But most fans chase one of them, and the rarer one is usually the one that sells for more.

In many Sonny Angel series, stores list Robby at 1 in 144 and the other secret at 2 in 144. So in a 12-box assortment, you have about a 22% chance of some secret, but only about 8% for Robby.

Part of the pull is the rush itself. Smiski collector Grace Powers told The University Daily Kansan there's "a whole culture around blind boxes and the serotonin." So before you open a box, decide which secret you're after, and plan with that number.

Getting both is a long road

Collecting both secrets takes far longer than collecting either one, because the second pull has to beat the rarer odds again. In the Sonny Angel example, an even chance at both takes about 131 boxes.

Pop Mart's Skullpanda Tell Me What You Want is kinder. Its two secrets are listed at 1 in 27 and 1 in 108, so even the rarer one shows up sooner than a typical 1 in 144 secret.

Questions collectors ask

How do I turn "2 in 144" into "1 in" odds?

Divide 144 by 2. So 2 in 144 is 1 in 72, and 3 in 144 is 1 in 48.

Can one box hold both secrets?

No. Each box holds one figure, so the two secrets always come from different boxes.
